SEEDS: Rehabilitation Strategy in Andamans


As part of the rehabilitation strategy for India tsunami response in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, SEEDS initiated few programme aiming towards disaster mitigation and preparedness amongst the community members of the islands. The aim is to spread awareness across all sections of the society through community based disaster management programme.

CARE INDIA: Tsunami Response Programme


CARE India: The Tsunami Response Programme (TRP) of CARE– India is operational in the three most affected districts of Tamil Nadu; namely – Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari and Karaikal in the union territory of India. In Andhra Pradesh the TRP is spread across four districts; namely – Nellore, Prakasham, Guntur and Krishna.

DCA India: Focus on Marginalised Sections


Even as it provided considerable support for fishing families, DCA given its strategic commitment to address the needs of the most marginalised in disaster situations, DCA could not stay put in fisher villages alone. One of the few funding NGOs to have formally developed a tsunami programme strategy, DCA identified the most affected and marginalised dalits, irulas, and women as its core target groups for its “Post Tsunami Disaster Mitigation/Prevention and Livelihood Programme, India”.

SNEHA: Years of Experience


When the tsunami hit, SNEHA actively participated in relief and rehabilitation. SNEHA associated Sangams (Self-Help Groups) played an important role by equally distributing the relief materials using the existing Sangam structure. There are 600 Sangams with 1200 members in 51 villages. SNEHA formed village committees to monitor relief distribution. The committees included two panchayat members, three women and five youths.
