Police attack tsunami protest in East

Police fired tear gas at tsunami victims on a protest in Arayampathy in the Batticaloa district.
Tsunami victims were demonstrating in front of the Arayampathy District Secretariat on Sunday protesting the dumping of relief stocks by officials.

Protestors who had excavated the buried goods showed them to the police and the media.

Rice, lentils, milk powder, paracetamol, pain relief balm and canned fish were among the items seen by journalists.

"This was meant for our consumption," cried a woman on the demonstration who said that they felt helpless.

Batticaloa District Secretary (DS) Velmurugu Shanmugam told journalists that he was informed by the Arayampathy divisional secretary of burying relief items past the expiry date.

However, a tsunami displaced who accused officials of destroying relief meant for victims told that some of the packing carried an expiry date of 2008.

Public Health Inspector N Nimaleshwaran told journalists that expired relief items found were burnt at a separate venue.

"No relief were dumped in stocks," he added.

Protesters were surprised to hear that relief sent to their use had gone out of date even before three months since the Indian Ocean Tsunami hit the Eastern coast.

The DS said that Police has been ordered to investigate into the matter.

The Batticloa - Kalmunai main road was blocked by protesters who later damaged the District Secretariat building and the official vehicle of the DS by pelting stones.

Police who fired tear gas on the protesting tsunami victims were also attacked by stones.

While the DS left the secretariat premises under Police and Special Task Force security the protesters went back to their camps and temporary shelters.
